Protect PDF guide

Require a password to open a PDF. Keep the password safely: this tool cannot recover a forgotten one.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Select an unprotected PDF

If the document is already protected, unlock it with the existing password first.

  2. 02

    Enter and confirm a password

Use at least four characters and enter the same password in both fields. Prefer a longer, hard-to-guess password.

  3. 03

    Download the protected copy

Run protection and open the downloaded PDF to confirm that it asks for your password. Share the password separately from the document.

Help and limitations

Can you recover my password?

No. Keep your original file and password in a safe place.

Does this add a watermark?

No. Password protection controls opening the file. Use Watermark PDF for a visible text label.

Before you use the output

Password protection is not a certificate-based signature or a guarantee about how an authorized recipient uses the document.
